Our “brain” — the network of Entropy Engine (EE) nodes — is not fueled by raw data alone. It comes alive when that data moves. The key driver isn’t the absolute value of a telemetry stream, but its delta — the measured change over time.
From Physics Inspiration to Engineering Reality
We borrow our language from physics, but we apply it with engineering discipline. In thermodynamics, entropy is a precise measure of microscopic states and unavailable energy. In the EE, “entropy” is a normalized instability score — a unitless measure of how far the system has drifted from its target operating ranges.
This is not a literal calculation of thermodynamic entropy. It’s a control signal that tells us: how much trouble are we in right now, and how urgently should we act?
Equilibrium Isn’t a Point — It’s a Range
In real systems — especially complex games or simulations — there’s rarely a single fixed “perfect” value for a variable. Instead, we define equilibrium as a target range where the system is considered healthy.
For NPC task queues, the range might be “between 1 and 3 tasks each.”
For resource stores, it might be “keep food levels between 80% and 120% of capacity.”
For environmental safety, “temperature between -5°C and +25°C.”
As long as the variable stays in its range, it’s stable. When it leaves that range, we measure the deviation.
Turning Deltas Into Instability Scores
Every telemetry stream in the EE has:
A target range (equilibrium band)
A normalization scale (so values become dimensionless)
A sensitivity curve (how strongly deviations are penalized)
A weight (how important this stream is to the overall stability)
We often use a quadratic curve for sensitivity, because in many domains, small deviations aren’t worth overreacting to — but large ones escalate quickly and deserve stronger correction. This isn’t a universal physical law; it’s an empirically chosen curve that worked best in our test worlds.
Other streams may use linear, Huber, or logistic curves depending on behavior needs.

If you look at an NPC’s current queue length and it’s 4 tasks, is that bad? It depends.
If it’s been holding steady at 4 for hours, the system may be stable enough to leave it alone.
If it just spiked from 1 to 4 in two seconds, that’s a high delta and a signal that something has changed in the environment — perhaps requiring a quick response.
The EE tracks both the current deviation and its rate of change. This dual measure allows us to distinguish between persistent imbalance and sudden shocks.
Combining Streams Into a Global Stability Index
The EE doesn’t act on single variables in isolation. It combines normalized, weighted instability scores from all active telemetry channels into a single Entropy Stability Index (ESI).
Low ESI → “Normal” operating mode
Medium ESI → “Caution” mode (tighten WIP limits, raise guard)
High ESI → “Emergency” mode (reduce workload admissions, broadcast protective policies)
Hysteresis prevents mode-flapping — the brain doesn’t panic over small oscillations.
Why VCs Should Care
For investors, the power of this approach lies in its universality and efficiency:
Domain-agnostic: The EE can consume any telemetry source — resource levels, NPC activity, environmental hazards — as long as it’s quantifiable.
Scalable: Works identically for a single NPC node or a million-node distributed simulation.
Cost-efficient: By reacting only to meaningful deltas, we cut unnecessary computation and network traffic.
Self-tuning: Calibration parameters can be learned from real gameplay data, improving balance without expensive reprogramming.
This means one investment in the EE core tech yields a platform that can be adapted across multiple game genres, simulation environments, or even non-gaming applications.
